We are going to discuss the Use of IS, AM, and ARE in English Grammar. These words are known as ‘Be verbs’. they help us express various things, like, existence, identity, and action. IS is for singular nouns like he or she, AM is for I, and ARE is for plural nouns like ‘they or We’. For Example, She is happy, I am learning, and They are playing. Learning these words is very important for making English sentences.

Use of IS, AM, ARE

1. IS
The Singular One: The first-person singular present tense ‘is’ is used when referring to one person, thing, or idea. It brings singularity to a sentence.

  • The cat is on the windowsill.
  • My favorite color is blue.

2. AM
The Self-Introduction:
‘I am’ is the first-person singular present of ‘to be,’  it is used when talking about oneself. It’s like giving a little introduction.

  • I am a student.
  • I am excited about the trip.

3. ARE
The Plural 

The present tense form ‘are’ is used with second-person singular, first-person plural, and second-person plural. It adds plurality to the sentence.

  • You are my best friend.
  • We are going to the park.
  • They are talented musicians.

4. Contractions – Short and Sweet:
Contractions are a combination of pronouns and ‘is,’ ‘am,’ or ‘are,’ creating a more conversational tone.

  • He’s (he is) coming to the party.
  • We’re (we are) excited for the weekend.

5. Interrogative Forms – Asking Questions:
Transforming a statement into a question involves rearranging the word order.

  • Statement: She is at the store.
  • Question: Is she at the store?

6. Negative Forms – Adding ‘Not’:
Negating a sentence with ‘not’ changes the meaning to the opposite.

  • Affirmative: They are coming to the meeting.
  • Negative: They are not coming to the meeting.

7. Continuous Tense – Adding ‘ing’:
Combine ‘is,’ ‘am,’ or ‘are’ with ‘-ing’ to express actions happening right now.

  • I am eating dinner.
  • They are playing in the park.

More Uses of IS AM ARE

is, am, are the most commonly used (helping and main verbs) in English. they are generally used to describe different situations.

Uses:

  • To describe any situation in the present time.
  • Naming any person in the present time.
  • To express the action that someone is doing now.
  • To describe about action that is done in the present time.

Before explaining these particular satiations separately, lets first talk about the (nouns and pronouns) we use with these helping verbs. 

is :  All singular nouns and subjects are used with it…. (he, she, it) 
Am:  it is used only with the subjects “I“.
Are: it is used with plural subjects and nouns ( We, You, I, They)

1. To Express any person or thing in the present time
in order to describe this particular condition, we use ‘Is, am, are,’ in the present time keeping the situation of a subject in mind.
Structure! Subject + is, am, are + Adjective

Examples of  IS

  • He is a doctor.
  • This is my book
  • She is my classmate.
  • She is a nurse.
  • He is so sad today.

Examples of  AM

  • I am a teacher.
  • I am a girl.
  • I am a student.
  • I am intelligent.
  • I am lazy.

Examples of  ARE

  • You are a boy.
  • We are students.
  • They are beggars.
  • You are a girl.
  • We are honest.

2. Naming any person in the present time
Structure! Subject + is, am, are + Noun

Examples of  ‘IS, AM, ARE’

  • He is smart.
  • My friend is funny. 
  • The weather is not good today.
  • This house is very small
  • She is ugly.
  • I am a teacher.
  • He is my bad friend.
  • She is a singer.
  • They are engineers.

3. To Express the Action that someone is doing now
Structure! Subject + is, am, are + V1+ing

Examples of  IS

  • She is eating meal.
  • He is teaching.
  • He is traveling.
  • The cat is drinking the milk.
  • She is cooking.

Examples of  AM

  • i am starting a new project now.
  • i am talking on the call to my friend.
  • i am looking for some help now.
  • i am trying to get a job nowadays.
  • i am making much money these days.

Examples of  ARE

  • They are searching for poor people.
  • we are having a dinner at the moment.
  • You are recording an English Lecture.
  • All Students are preparing for their exams.
  • The girls’ are making delicious foods.

4. To describe about action that is done in the present time.
Structure! Subject + is, am, are + V3 + ( by the doer)

Examples

  • They are loved for their nice nature.
  • He is paid on time by his company.
  • All the doctors are trained and educated very well.
  • I am always avoided by my parents for rude behavior.
  • Asim is considered the best English Teacher.

Sentence Transformation:

Rewrite the given sentences using a different form of the verb.

  • The cat is sleeping on the windowsill. (Change to –> am )
  • We are planning a surprise for her birthday. (Change to –> is )
  • These books are interesting to read. (Change to => am)
  • The flowers in the garden are blooming beautifully. (Change to –> is)
  • I am going to the store after work. (Change to–> are)

IS AM ARE Examples

IS:

  • The moon is shining brightly in the night sky.
  • The movie I watched last night is a comedy.
  • My favorite subject in school is mathematics.
  • The answer to the question is correct.
  • The baby in the crib is sleeping peacefully.

AM:

  • I am a student at the university.
  • Right now, I am working on a project.
  • She asked if I am available tomorrow.
  • I often say, “I am fine” when someone asks how I am.
  • The reason I’m late is that I am stuck in traffic.

ARE:

  • Dogs and cats are common pets.
  • We are planning a trip to the beach.
  • Birds in the trees are chirping loudly.
  • The cars on the road are moving slowly in traffic.
  • Our family are big fans of hiking.
